In Malaysia, single mothers are in their predicament mostly as a result of spousal death, spousal abandonment or divorce. Many face financial challenges and the majority of single mothers that hail from rural areas usually lack specialized job skills, as well as the education required to get proper employment.

    If you have the dreams, we have the means. Honda working in partnership with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is dedicated to help the under privileged youth to take their first steps into realizing the power of their dreams through The Honda Dreams Fund (HDF) scholarship. Honda is assisting these youth to further their studies or skills training at a local institution of their choice in Malaysia.

    I hummed this song as I slowly ran my eyes down the checklist I had earlier prepared regarding my coming university intake. Just as the lyrics, I truly feel on top of the world now. Well, it has been roughly 4 months now since I paved my way into Honda Malaysia and United Nation Development Programme (UNDP)’s records as one of the 20 inaugural Honda Dreams Fund scholars this year and really it has been rather 4 different months of my life since then.

    The Honda Dreams Fund (HDF) team had decided to embark on a public promotions campaign in the form of road shows to reach out to the communities, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds. In Sabah and Sarawak, poverty is largely a rural phenomenon. Thus, the HDF team set out to promote the educational opportunities afforded by the HDF to these very communities in the regions of Sabah, Sarawak and parts of Peninsular Malaysia.

    As this is Malaysia’s first NHDR, the entire process has helped to build national capacities in developing such a report in line with international best practices. With such capacities built, it opens the doors for future reports to be undertaken and also the possibility of developing the HDRs at regional or sub-national levels on issues that demand focus at a more disaggregated level.
