Perched along one of the many tributaries of the Sarawak River on the island of Borneo, lies the quaint village of Sungai Tapang, consisting of a colony of scattered houses in the evergreen, dotted around the slow meandering river.

A cream-coloured house stands among the many, surrounded by an orchard and a small pepper plantation, home to generations in my family and currently to my aunt and her extended family. For me it will always be a repository of warm memories of Christmases past, of harvest festivals, of fruit picking adventures, and joyous merry making. Though the village looks the same, the lives of many are changed as the pandemic extends its global reach. The village is now quieter than usual...
